Asbestos Testing

Brisbane Asbestos Testing Services

Australia banned asbestos on the 31st of December 2003. In many cases, it can remain safely in buildings causing no problems. However, as soon as asbestos is disturbed, it becomes a health hazard.

Asbestos can be difficult to locate with the naked eye because it’s usually secured inside masonry and other products. That is why it’s essential to send suspect materials to a laboratory for testing.

Therefore if you suspect asbestos is present in any capacity in your home or building, call the team at NO1 Asbestos Removals Brisbane.

We are approved testers and will send samples to our partner laboratory, fully accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia (NATA). They’ll examine the asbestos-containing materials under a polarised light microscope, and the results will be available within 24 hours. This will confirm whether the suspected material contains asbestos and, if so, which type.

There are six types of asbestos:

  • Chrysotile (white asbestos)
  • Amosite (brown asbestos)
  • Crocidolite (blue asbestos)
  • Tremolite
  • Actinolite
  • Anthophyllite

If the test results come back positive, we’ll provide you with recommendations about what to do next. This could include leaving the asbestos in place (if it isn’t damaged and in no danger of being disturbed) or removing it as soon as possible.

Asbestos Sample Testing

We can arrange a time that suits you to take a sample. Alternatively, you can choose to provide the sample yourself. You do not need an asbestos removal licence for this job.

You can then send the sample directly to our partner lab, or we will collect it from you and send it away for testing. Please note if you decide to collect your own sample, you should wear a P2 protective mask. These can filter out very fine particles from the air. A standard dust mask will not protect you from asbestos fibres should they become airborne.

Please get in touch with us, and we´ll give you detailed instructions and guidance on how to collect a sample, such as:

  • It has to weigh between 5 and 100 grams.
  • It should then be placed in a clip-lock plastic bag, and double bagged inside a separate bag.

We do not recommend home asbestos kits for this purpose. Some of their masks offer weak, if any, protection. You would also be sending the material to an unknown lab with no guarantees about the quality of their testing procedures or turnaround times.
